Find out how laser treatment works to eliminate pesky toenail fungal infections.

With winter melting away and the warm weather showing up, it won’t soon be long before it’s sandal and flip flop season. You want to be able to sport those beautiful feet all summer long, but if you have a toenail fungal infection then you may think twice. Don’t let this  problem affect you this summer. Turn to our team of podiatrists in Schaumburg, IL for help!

What causes fungal infections of the toenails?

Fungal infections of the nail are most often caused by dermatophyte, a type of fungus that can happily live on nails, hair and skin. Dermatophytes are also responsible for athlete’s foot, which can also affect the toenails.

How does this laser treatment work?

This high-intensity laser is directed at the affected toenail where the light will penetrate through layers of the nail to reach and kill the infection. It can eliminate the infection painlessly without affecting the healthy skin or nail surrounding it.

Why choose laser treatment over other options?

It may seem simple enough that if the infection is pretty superficial that you should be able to treat it effectively with topical over-the-counter medications, but this isn’t often the case since the nail is rather impenetrable and the medication may not reach the fungus at all. Plus, there are no side effects of laser treatment unlike with oral or topical medications, which makes it an ideal treatment for many of our patients.

What should I expect from my treatment?

This procedure can take up to an hour to complete and you may require subsequent treatments from your Schaumburg foot doctor if your infection is severe. No anesthesia or needles are required as the procedure is completely painless. All you may notice is a warming sensation when the laser is directed at the toenail.

Keep in mind that your toenail will not be immediately clear after treatment. It will take a couple months for the nail to grow out clear.

Is there a recovery period?

There is absolutely no recovery period after your procedure. You may go about your daily activities as planned.
