What are the symptoms of flat feet?

Flat feet can be something you inherited, or your arches can fall as an adult due to injury, arthritis, diabetes, or being overweight. Having flat feet changes your gait, meaning the way you stand and walk, which can lead to all kinds of issues. Common signs and symptoms of flat feet include:

  • Collapsed arches
  • Arch pain
  • Heel pain
  • Ankle swelling

If you don’t properly support your flat feet through footwear or orthotic inserts, you may also find that your pain worsens with activity. Before your flat feel start causing regular discomfort and affecting you on a daily basis, schedule a podiatric evaluation.

When should I see a podiatrist for flat feet?

Because symptoms associated with flat feet are likely only going to get worse with each step you take, the team of board-certified podiatrists at the Center for Podiatric Medicine want to evaluate you no matter how minor or how sporadic your symptoms may seem. It’s particularly important to have your flat feet evaluated if you experience:

  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Pain that continues to worsen
  • Ankle instability
  • Tenderness or inflammation

Because symptoms associated with flat feet can start affecting your work, daily activities, and workout routine, you should get started on treatment right away.

How are flat feet treated?

Your flat feet treatment plan is personalized and based on the severity of your condition, as well as your daily lifestyle. Flat feet therapies include:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT)
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing and taping

While surgery alone doesn’t correct flat feet, in some cases, the podiatry team may recommend surgery to repair a related issue. For instance, if your flat feet are caused by a torn tendon, your surgeon can repair the tendon to restore your normal foot function.

Our surgeons are also trained to correct flat feet with the HyProCure®  subtalar joint implant.

No matter which flat feet treatment is right for you, even if surgery is necessary, you can feel confident that the podiatry team is going to help resolve your discomfort.
