Athlete’s foot is contagious. Find out how to prevent it from affecting others.athlete's foot

You know how quickly the common cold or flu spreads around your family the moment one child or member of your family falls ill. The same can be said for someone who has athlete’s foot. This fungal infection is highly contagious and can spread easily to others if you aren’t careful. Our Schaumburg, Elmhurst, and River North, IL and Highland, IN podiatrists are here to provide some tips on how to prevent the spread of athlete’s foot.

Okay, first thing is first. You’ll want to know what areas of the home could end up being breeding grounds for fungus. There are many ways that you can spread athlete’s foot to each other. If someone in your family has athlete’s foot our River North, IL foot doctors will most likely tell you:

Remove bathmats: How often do you wash your bathmats? These mats are typically used by everyone in a household and therefore spend a lot of time being damp or wet. This creates the perfect environment for fungus to live. If someone already has a fungal infection, your best option is to immediately remove all bathmats, throw them in the laundry and only put them back on the bathroom floors once the infection has completely gone away.

Don’t share towels: Just as bathmats can harbor fungus, so too can towels. It’s easy to spread athlete’s foot to another individual by using the same towel. Of course, this also includes shower sponges. Make sure that any items such as these that are used by the member of your family with athlete’s foot is kept separate from everyone else’s bathroom items.

Wear socks or protective shoes: Since you will all walk on the same floors it’s important to prevent the spread of infection by not only keeping feet clean and dry but also by wearing socks or even flip flops around the house. It might sound like overkill but it could provide the barrier of protection you need. Just remember to not wear the same socks twice in a row.
