For people with feet problems, things as simple as standing up with ease, walking to the store or even running simple errands could be hard or even impossible. Thankfully, there are many forms of treatment for problems related to the feet. With help from your Schaumburg, IL podiatrist at the Center for Podiatric Medicine, you can find the right orthotic for you and get back to a normal, pain-freeOrthotics life.

How do I know if I need orthotics?
Orthotics are mainly used in patients with abnormal alignment or function, usually in the feet. More pressure may be put on one area of the foot, making it hard or impossible to walk correctly, and affecting not just the feet, but the alignment of the spine, pelvis and legs as well.

Most people have one of three types of feet. Pronated feet roll to the inside during movement. Neutral feet remain straight and do not roll during normal movement. The opposite of pronated feet, supinated feet roll outward during motion. Orthotics are needed when there is too high or too little of an arch in the foot, or when the feet are pronated or supinated. These types of abnormalities produce a variety of symptoms, including arch or heel pain, corns or calluses, knee, hip or back pain, tendonitis or ankle sprains.

What are orthotics?
Orthotics are orthopedic devices that support the feet or ankles to aid in comfort and functionality. They can range drastically in materials and function, and be found in two forms:

  • Over-the-counter: Over-the-counter orthotics, usually bought at a drug store, are normally found in one-size-fits-all or small, medium and large varieties. While they could prove to be effective for mild cases, they are not as intricately designed as the custom made variety.
  • Custom made: Custom made orthotics can range from inserts that fit into your existing shoes to completely custom made shoes. These can come in the form of functional orthotics (which help correct the actual shape of the foot) and accommodative orthotics (which are usually braces or splints used to correct minor foot problems or pain).

The best way to determine if you need orthotics is to consult with the doctors at the Center for Podiatric Medicine in Schaumburg, IL. Call 847-352-1473 to schedule your appointment today!
